Poppy Playtime is the mascot-horror game series from Mob Entertainment that turned an abandoned toy factory into one of gaming's scariest places. You play a former employee of Playtime Co. who returns to the factory years after everyone vanished — and discovers the toys are still alive, and very angry.

Chapter 5, subtitled "Broken Things," launched on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on February 18, 2026, and arrived on consoles — Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and 4, and Nintendo Switch — on May 27, 2026. It's the darkest chapter yet, and it finally puts you face to face with the Prototype, the puppetmaster behind everything that's happened at Playtime Co.

Quick facts

  • Developer: Mob Entertainment, an indie studio founded in 2015 by brothers Zach and Seth Belanger.
  • Genre: first-person horror puzzle game — think escape-room puzzles with things hunting you between them.
  • Chapters out: five, all available on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), with console and mobile versions of the chapters.
  • Newest chapter: Chapter 5: "Broken Things" — PC February 18, 2026; consoles May 27, 2026.
  • Also in the works: a multiplayer spinoff, Escape from Playtime, revealed at gamescom 2026 and heading to Steam Early Access; a film adaptation with Legendary Entertainment.

What is Poppy Playtime?

Ten years after the staff of Playtime Co. disappeared without a trace, you receive a letter from the toys themselves, begging you to come back. You return to the factory that made Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs, and the rest of the beloved toy line, and you explore it with the GrabPack — a backpack with extendable hands that lets you grab distant objects, complete electrical circuits, and swing across gaps. If you've never played, our full explainer covers the premise, the characters, and what makes the series tick.

All five chapters in order

Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze — the short, free introduction. You explore the factory lobby and meet Huggy Wuggy. It takes about 30–45 minutes and remains the best way to try the series for free on PC.

Chapter 2: Fly in a Web — a much bigger chapter set in the Game Station, introducing Mommy Long Legs and the three minigames (Musical Memory, Wack-a-Wuggy, Statues) that became series staples.

Chapter 3: Deep Sleep — the descent into Playcare, the factory's orphanage, with CatNap as the main threat and the gas mask mechanic.

Chapter 4: Safe Haven — the longest chapter before 5, ending on the cliffhanger that Broken Things picks up directly.

Chapter 5: Broken Things — the finale-scale chapter. Separated from your allies and hunted by Huggy Wuggy as the factory's original security system, you descend into the Prototype's domain: the tattered remains of toys that once were, new GrabPack tools, and answers about Experiment 1006 that the series has been building toward since Chapter 1.

How it plays: the GrabPack and the puzzles

The GrabPack is Poppy Playtime's signature. Both hands fire independently — you can hold a door open with one while pulling a lever with the other, or bridge two power conduits to route electricity across a room. Each chapter adds new hands and upgrades: the green hand conducts electricity, the purple hand has different reach properties, and Chapter 5 introduces new tools and functionality for its puzzles and environmental hazards.

The puzzles are the actual game; the horror is the seasoning. Expect circuit routing, object retrieval, timing challenges, and chase sequences where you memorize a route while something screams behind you. The gameplay guide breaks down every GrabPack mechanic, puzzle type, and collectible across all five chapters.

Is it free? Pricing explained

Chapter 1 is free on PC — that's the demo that hooked millions. Chapters 2 through 5 are paid, sold individually as DLC-style chapters on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and as standalone purchases on consoles and mobile. Buying the full set on PC is the cheapest way to play everything; console versions sometimes bundle chapters. The pricing guide lays out exactly what each chapter costs on each platform and the cheapest way to own the whole series.

Where to play: every platform

PC is the lead platform — every chapter launches there first, on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Consoles get each chapter a few months later: Chapter 5 hit Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Switch on May 27, 2026. Earlier chapters also have mobile ports. One caution: the series' popularity has spawned a swamp of fake mobile "Chapter 5" apps and knockoff downloads. The game is only sold through official stores — anything offering a free Chapter 5 APK is a scam. The download guide lists the legitimate store pages for every platform.

Is it scary? Is it okay for kids?

Yes, it's genuinely scary — jump scares, chase sequences, and some deeply unsettling lore about what happened to the factory's children. It's rated for teens and up, and the later chapters get darker, not lighter. Younger kids mostly know Poppy Playtime from YouTube and merch rather than the actual games, which is fine, but the games themselves are not children's games. The FAQ covers age ratings, scare levels per chapter, and how to talk to kids who are into the characters but not ready for the horror.

Poppy Playtime vs the other mascot-horror games

The series sits in the mascot-horror wave alongside Five Nights at Freddy's, Bendy and the Ink Machine, and Garten of Banban. FNAF is about surveillance and resource management across nights; Bendy leans into vintage cartoon aesthetics; Poppy Playtime is the most hands-on of the bunch — first-person exploration, physical puzzles, and chase sequences. If you like one, you'll probably like the others, but Poppy's GrabPack puzzles give it a distinct feel.
